PCL1 Pacific Coast League

Sessions, Fernandez Win PCL Honors

Published on June 30, 2003 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– New Orleans Zephyrs starter Doug Sessions is the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week for games beginning on June 23 and continuing through June 29 for not allowing an earned run in two starts while racking up two victories. Portland Beavers outfielder Alex Fernandez wins the Batter of the Week accolade thanks to his .500 batting average and eight runs scored during the same time frame.

Sessions, a resident of Orange Park, Florida, who last week was selected to the Pacific Coast League All-Star Team, allowed one unearned run on five hits through six innings in his first start of the week on June 24, a 3-1 win over the Tacoma Rainiers. The Houston Astros prospect then won his second start of the week on June 29 by again allowing just one unearned run on two hits through eight innings in a 5-1 defeat of Albuquerque. The right-hander has won five straight while lowering his earned run average to 2.00, second best in the PCL.

San Diego Padres farmhand Alex Fernandez wasted little time asserting himself for the Coast League's hitter's honor, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and a run batted in during Portland's 10-6 win over Memphis on June 23. The next day, the native of Cotui, Dominican Republic hit another homer and drove in three with a couple of runs scored in a 2-for-5 performance before the Beavers hit the road for Salt Lake, where the outfielder made the most of a couple of high scoring games. On June 28, during a 15-13 win over the Stingers, Fernandez went 4-for-6 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored, bringing his total line for the week to eight runs scored, three doubles, two homers, and six RBI.
