Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
NORWICH, CT - Connecticut starting pitcher Chavez Fernander struck out nine batters while scattering three hits over six shutout innings as the Tigers defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades 3-1 Saturday night from Dodd Stadium. It was the Renegades fourth consecutive loss.
The Tigers jumped out on top in the first inning as three straight singles loaded the bases with one out. Second-baseman Corey Joyce reached on a fielder's choice groundout to third as he legged out the potential double play ball at first. Rightfielder Kingston Liniak scored from third on the play and gave Connecticut the early lead.
They would add another run in the third as leftfielder Bryant Packard lined a one-out single to center, moved to second on a single to left from catcher Eliezer Alfonzo, then scored on a two-out single to right by first-baseman Jordan Verdon to make the score 2-0.
Connecticut scored their final run in the sixth. Centerfielder Eric De La Rosa drew a one-out walk, then stole second. He would steal third as well and score as the throw to third from Hudson Valley catcher Jordyn Muffley went into leftfield and gave the Tigers a three-run lead.
The Renegades only run came in the eighth inning as first-baseman Carlos Vargas belted his first homerun of the season. It was a solo shot over the leftfield wall to make the score 3-1.
That was as close as the Renegades got as they were held to only five baserunners for the game. Hudson Valley had runners at first and second on back-to-back singles in the fourth, but Fernander got consecutive groundouts from rightfielder Hill Alexander and Muffley to end the threat. Leftfielder K.V. Edwards singled and stole second to start the sixth, but was picked off by Fernander at second to erase the scoring opportunity.
Hudson Valley was held to four hits in the game, while Connecticut collected nine. The Tigers got two singles apiece from Liniak, Packard, and Alfonzo. Liniak and Packard each scored a run as well.
Fernander's win moved him to 2-1 on the season as he allowed no free passes to Hudson Valley. Getting the save was Andrew Magno who fired a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season. Taking the loss for the Renegades was starter Edisson Gonzalez (02) who allowed two runs on eight hits over five innings. The right-hander also struck out eight as he and relievers Colby White and Hector Figueroa combined to strike out 12 Tigers.
Hudson Valley will try to avoid the sweep as they play the finale of their three-game series with the Tigers tomorrow. First-pitch is scheduled for 4:05. Righty Daiveyon Whittle (0-0, 0.59 ERA) will pitch for the Renegades against southpaw Jack O'Loughlin (1-1, 3.00 ERA) of the Tigers.
The Renegades return home on Monday, July 1st when they open a three-game series against the Brooklyn Cyclones. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com, in person at the Dutchess Stadium ticket window, or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
