Cutters Fall in Extras
June 29, 2019 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Crosscutters fell in a wild and exciting extra-inning encounter at the West Virginia Black Bears on Saturday night 6-5 in 11 innings. The Cutters battled back from an early 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead but the Black Bears plated single runs in the 8th and the 11th to push through with the victory.
Left fielder Corbin Williams kept the game alive in the 10th with a spectacular double-play on his catch of a foul-pop and subsequent rifle home to fire out a runner. That happened immediately after a hot-shot comebacker off the glove of pitcher Adam Cox was barehanded by second baseman Kendall Simmons who converted on a force out at home.
Simmons had a double, rbi, stolen vase and run scored as well as the exciting defensive gem in the 10th.
Tyler Burch (in his Cutters debut) and Luis Cedeno came out of the bullpen to combine for 13 consecutive outs from the third through the eighth but then the only hit that Cedeno would allow ended up plating the tying run.
The Cutters racked up four more steals (Hunter Markwardt with two, Nicolas Torres, Kendall Simmons). Pat Borders' speedy thieves on the bases retook the league lead with 31 swpies.
Williamsport also banged out a couple more doubles (Kendall Simmons and Hunter Hearn) and lead the NYPL with 34 two-baggers.
Williamsport is 0-2 in extra-inning games this season.
The Crosscutters and Black Bears will wrap up the series with a Sunday matinee at 1:05 p.m. Rafael Carvajal will still for Williamsport. The Cutters return to BB&T Ballpark to open a six-game homestand on Monday. The big week will feature fireworks shows on Wednesday, July 3rd and Friday, July 5th.
