FC Dallas Knocks Off SMU, 4-0

February 16, 2006 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
FC Dallas News Release

DALLAS - FC Dallas picked up its second win in as many preseason matches with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over SMU on Wednesday night at Westcott Field. Mario Torres' first half strike was all that the Hoops would need on the night, but second half substitute Dominic Oduro added a pair of goals with Carlos Ruiz added one in between to give FCD the win.

FC Dallas fielded a lineup with only three changes from Saturday's match, and midway through the first half one of those new faces got on the Hoops on the board as Torres struck his first goal of the preseason. Sean Babcock's cross took a deflection inside the box and caromed directly to Torres who blasted a shot just inside the far post to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The score would stay that way for the remainder of the 40 minute opening half, but after the break FCD brought on a pair of fresh strikers and the duo would quickly link up for a pair of goals to extend the lead to 3-0.

In his first and likely only appearance for FC Dallas before playing for the Guatemalan National Team against the United States on Sunday at Pizza Hut Park, Carlos Ruiz gave the fans on hand at SMU a sneak peek of what is hopefully to come in 2006. Not long after coming on, Ruiz played a ball through the box for Oduro who placed a low, right-footed shot past the Mustangs keeper to double the lead at 2-0. Minutes later, Ruiz would score one of his own, slamming a right-footed shot home from the top of the box to give the Hoops a 3-0 edge.

With Ruiz and Oduro taking care of business at one end of the field, FCD keeper Ray Burse Jr. was able to have another strong performance en route to his second clean sheet in as many matches this season.

Oduro would add a fourth late as he raced onto a long clearance from the back to break in alone on the SMU goal before calmly slotting a shot into the corner of the goal to give the game its final 4-0 scoreline.

FC Dallas is back in action on Saturday afternoon at 11:30 a.m. at Pizza Hut Park when it hosts Houston 1836 for the first time ever. This will be played on FC Dallas' training field (Field #1) and is free and open to all fans.
