FC Dallas News Release
FRISCO, Texas (Sunday, Nov. 1) - FC Dallas took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a goal scored by Fabian Castillo, but gave up two second-half goals and fell, 2-1, in front of 39,599 fans in Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoff action tonight at CenturyLink Field.
FC Dallas now returns home to Toyota Stadium for the second leg of the Western Conference Semifinals against Seattle. That match, presented by Toyota, is set for 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8.
FC Dallas struck first in the 18th minute, mere seconds after defender Zach Loyd denied Sounders FC forward Clint Dempsey the ball in the area. FC Dallas quickly counter attacked through playmaker Mauro Diaz, who was able to find Castillo with an outside-of-the-foot pass that curled perfectly behind the defender. The pass put Castillo in alone against Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei. He appeared to have poked the ball too far out in front of him, causing Frei to charge off his line, but Castillo caught the ball just before the goalkeeper arrived and fired a shot inside the far post to give Dallas a 1-0 lead.
Young Homegrown players, Jesse Gonzalez and Victor Ulloa combined to keep Seattle from finding the back of the net in the 28th and 30th minutes. Gonzalez laid out to punch away a cross attempt from Seattle's Andreas Ivanschitz. Two minutes later Victor Ulloa headed away a corner kick and then threw himself in front of a hard shot from Erik Friberg to help Dallas maintain its one-goal edge.
Gonzalez came up big for FC Dallas again just before the half. A free kick from outside the area was blocked down to the feet of Dempsey inside the area. The U.S. International got off a quick shot but fortunately for the goalkeeper, it was directly at his feet. Gonzalez was able to stop the shot and smother the rebound to keep Dallas in the lead at halftime.
Seattle leveled the match, 1-1, in the 67th minute when FC Dallas failed to clear the ball from its defensive third of the pitch. Andreas Ivanschitz grabbed the loose ball and sprinted towards goal before striking a low shot to the far post. The strike narrowly avoided the left arm of Gonzalez before finding the side netting.
Sounders FC went ahead, 2-1, in the 86th minute when Dempsey bent a free kick around the wall and into the far corner of the net. The kick was awarded by referee Kevin Stott, 20 yards from goal, after Seattle's Cristian Roldan went to ground.
