FC Dallas drops 2-0 decision to San Jose Earthquakes

FRISCO, Texas - Major League Soccer's 2010 Golden Boot Winner Chris Wondolowski netted two first half goals as the San Jose Earthquakes snapped FC Dallas' 11-game home unbeaten streak at Pizza Hut Park this evening.

FC Dallas surrendered the first goal of the match early. In the fifth minute, right back Chris Leitch came forward to chip a ball over the head of center back Zach Loyd. Wondolowski took the pass from Leitch on his chest, cut hard to his right by a defender and unleashed a left-footed half-volley past goalkeeper Kevin Hartman high to his right side.

Wondolowski was in the right spot at the right time again in the 23rd minute. Following a San Jose free kick attempt from just beyond the top right corner of the 18-yard box, Leitch played another looping cross, this time to the back post. George John won the header, but knocked it out wide, where Joey Gjertsen had plenty of time to send a line-drive cross to the top of the six-yard box. There, Wondolowski rose above a pack of players to chip a ball to the far side netting for a 2-0 lead.

Following halftime, FC Dallas had a chance to grab a goal back in the 55th minute when David Ferreira won a ball back deep in San Jose territory. Working his way down the end line from the left corner flag, Ferreira sent a centering pass to Milton Rodriguez. The pass was partially deflected by San Jose, but Rodriguez still managed to get a toe on the loose ball. The resulting shot was a slow roller to the left post, giving San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch time to recover and make a diving save at his left post.

Fabian Castillo made his Major League Soccer debut two minutes later when he came on for Ricardo Villar. The 18-year old Colombian gave FC Dallas added speed on the left flank. Five minutes later, FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman inserted Eric Avlia to give the home side an offensive spark as they chased the game the remainder of the match.

Hyndman pushed the pedal as far as it would go when he brought on Ruben Luna for Jackson in the 74th minute. The substitution altered FC Dallas' formation from a 4-1-4-1 to a 3-5-2. Luna nearly pulled one back for the defending Western Conference Champions in the 87th minute. On the play, Zach Loyd came forward to loft a cross to the back post. Luna out-jumped his marker to win the header, redirecting a shot high to the far post, but Busch was equal to the task and denied the 18-year old Home Grown player of his first MLS goal.
