Houston Dynamo FC News Release
FC Dallas scored three unanswered goals in the second half for a 4-1 win over the Houston Dynamo in the Texas Derby on Saturday at BBVA Compass Stadium. After Ricardo Clark's first-half equalizer, Je-Vaughn Watson scored two goals as FC Dallas scored three goals in ten minutes following a red card to Houston defender David Horst.
The Dynamo (2-2-0; 6 points) visit the New England Revolution next Saturday for the first of three road games before returning to BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday, April 29 to host the Portland Timbers.
With the win in the lone 2014 edition of the Texas Derby, FC Dallas retains El Capitan for the second consecutive season after winning the season series between the Texas rivals.
With the score tied 1-1 in the 60th minute, a Houston turnover led to a challenge near the sideline between Horst and FC Dallas midfielder Fabian Castillo. Horst slid for the challenge and was issued a straight red card by referee Ricardo Salazar.
It was the first red card in Horst's MLS career.
FC Dallas took immediate advantage of the extra player on the ensuing free kick as Mauro Diaz served a cross to the back post and Watson's header from eight yards found the net for a 2-1 lead.
Well before the red card, the Dynamo created several chances in the first half. In the 14th minute, a scrum between the teams led to Davis playing a short pass to Corey Ashe on the left side of the penalty area. Ashe slid a pass to Giles Barnes in the center of the box and Barnes forced a great save from FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz.
Six minutes later Davis used a perfect back heel to drop a pass in the path of Clark. The midfielder drove a left-footed shot from 25 yards just wide of the far post.
Houston created a third chance in the first half in the 29th minute as Bruin settled a header from Clark at midfield and drove forward all the way to the edge of the penalty area before firing a shot directly at Seitz.
Following Houston's chances, FC Dallas created it own in the 30th minute and drew a penalty. After Castillo's shot was blocked, Mauro Diaz dribbled at the top of the box and drew a foul on Clark and referee Ricardo Salazar awarded a penalty kick to FC Dallas.
FC Dallas midfielder Michel converted the spot kick for a 1-0 lead.
Houston responded ten minutes later as Davis drew a foul near the end line and delivered the subsequent free kick into a dangerous spot eight yards from goal where Clark beat his defender and headed past Seitz for a headed goal for the second straight game.
It was Clark's second goal of the season and also Davis's second assist. The pair also connected on Clark's set piece goal last Saturday at Vancouver.
It was also Davis' 103rd career regular season assist to surpass Jaime Moreno (102) for fifth on the MLS all-time assist list. Davis is nine assists away from Preki (112) for fourth place.
It was also Clark's 16th career goal in all competitions with the Dynamo to pass Bobby Boswell for seventh on the club list.
Davis took a hard tackle from Watson on the play that led to the set piece goal. The Dynamo captain had to exit the game in the 45th minute with an apparent ankle injury.
After Watson's goal delivered FC Dallas a 2-1 lead, the former Dynamo midfielder was involved in Dallas' third goal of the night. A corner kick was delivered inside the penalty area toward Watson, who was marked by Giles Barnes. The service skipped off Barnes' head and into the net for an own goal and a 3-1 lead for the visitors.
Watson capped the scoring in the 70th minute. Diaz threaded a pass from midfield in behind the Houston defense and the Jamaican finished inside the far post from 18 yards for Dallas' third goal in ten minutes and a 4-1 win.
Ten minutes later, Kofi Sarkodie charged into the penalty area and was fouled by Jair Benitez as the Dynamo were awarded a penalty kick.
Boniek Garcia took the spot kick with a low shot to his left, but Seitz dove and made a strong save to retain the three-goal lead.
It was just the second win in Houston for FC Dallas, who improved to 2-6-3 all-time in Houston.
