Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Sunday, April 6, 2014) - Chivas USA fell, 3-0, to the LA Galaxy Sunday afternoon at the StubHub Center in the first leg of the SuperClásico. Playing as the visiting side, Galaxy now takes the one-game advantage in the season derby led by first-half scores from Robbie Keane and Stefan Ishizaki to go along with Baggio Husidic's second-half tally.
The Red-and-White generated solid run of play beginning in the 18th minute and got into promising spaces inside the box. Rookie midfielder Thomas McNamara worked the ball near the end line outside the left post, but his cross was deflected by the visiting side's defense. A minute later, forward Erick "Cubo" Torres got off his first shot of the match near the same spot that sailed over the crossbar.
Midfielder Carlos Alvarez looked to combine with striker Luke Moore in the 21st minute on a give-and-go sequence with Torres inside the arc, but Moore was unable to get off a shot before LA's back line closed in on the threat.
Galaxy went up 2-0 after goals in the 37th and 42nd minute. Defender Dan Gargan headed a ball into the short area from the right side of the box intended for Keane. As goalkeeper Dan Kennedy came off his line to break up the pass, the ball had enough force behind it after a small collision to be pushed toward the back of the net. Five minutes later, Ishizaki took control of a pass from Juninho behind the arc and made a run toward the end line by the left post to send his floater over Kennedy and into the right side netting.
Chivas looked to their bench and brought on first-year midfielder Leandro Barrera to start the second half and try and cut into the deficit, but it was the Galaxy who got on the scoresheet once more in the 56th minute on Husidic's strike that traveled inside the left post.
The Rojiblancos looked to generate chances in their attacking third and had a pair of promising looks beginning in the 81st minute. Mauro Rosales played a cross from his right wing spot to link up with Alvarez for a one-time side volley, but Galaxy keeper Brian Perk was able to collect the shot. A minute later, Rosales again looked to cross, but the Red-and-White attackers were unable to get on the end of the low liner that traveled through the box and out of bounds.
Chivas USA now continue their four-game stretch against Western Conference opponents next Saturday when they travel to face the Portland Timbers at Providence Park. The 7:30 p.m. (PT) match will mark the first leg in the three-game season series and can be heard live on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM.
