FC Cincinnati to Support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

FC Cincinnati News Release

CINCINNATI - FC Cincinnati will help bring attention to Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September with a variety of partnerships and activations.

Every year, almost 16,000 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer and almost one quarter of them will not survive their disease. Childhood cancer care-givers, charities and researchers have come together to use September as an annual recognition that more can be done to save children from the perils of a cancer diagnosis.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month has helped put a brighter light on what types of cancers typically affect children, how children and their families cope with their diagnoses and help raise funds for further research.

"We're so pleased to work with such extraordinary, locally based children's cancer organizations in September," Kate Solomon, FC Cincinnati Senior Director of Marketing and Community Engagement, said. "It's an important cause and one that doesn't receive nearly enough attention day-to-day. We're thrilled to be able to put a bigger spotlight on the work these groups are doing for families who are afflicted by children's cancers, and who are also funding research to eradicate the diseases all together."

This September, FC Cincinnati will work with several local non-profit organizations to bring greater visibility to their respective work in the childhood cancer field. At each of the team's three home games in September, FCC will host different organizations as the club's Community Outreach Partner, which is presented by Home City Ice.

FC Cincinnati will welcome and highlight the work of the Dragonfly Foundation on Sept. 1 against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, Cancer Free Kids on Sunday, Sept. 16 against Toronto FC II and The Cure Starts Now on Saturday, Sept. 29 against Indy Eleven. Each of the three organizations will select children affected by pediatric cancer to participate as walk-out kids and will be featured during pre-game as the community partner of the match. Each organization will host a booth along the east concourse of the stadium at its designated game, as well.

The Dragonfly Foundation helps pediatric cancer families and patients find strength, courage and joy throughout treatment and recovery in the form of support and comfort services.

Cancer Free Kids seeks to eradicate cancer as a life-threatening disease in children by funding promising research that might otherwise go un- or under-funded.

The Cure Starts Now focused on research to find a cure for DIPG, a rare form of pediatric brain cancer.

In addition to the club's community partners, goalkeeper Evan Newton, FCC and Cincy Shirts have collaborated on a fundraising effort for Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 4, specially designed t-shirts - featuring Newton's silhouette a making heart-shaped hands symbol while diving for a save - will be available for purchase through Cincy Shirts. All profits from the sale of the special-edition shirts will be donated to Cincinnati Children's Hospital's.

The t-shirts will be available online at cincyshirts.com beginning Tuesday, Sept. 4, and in the company's three storefronts (Over-the-Rhine, Hyde Park and Loveland) starting Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Since arriving in Cincinnati this past winter, Newton has made regular visits to Cincinnati Children's Hospital - both organized by the team and on his own.

"It's really cool that the club and Cincy Shirts were both open to the idea to raise for the hospital," Newton said. "It's an important organization to me. With the visits I make and the relationships I've formed - both with patients and staff - it's a big part of my experience here in Cincinnati. Hopefully fans will see the importance of this project and help raise a lot of money for cancer programs at Children's Hospital."

First-place FC Cincinnati (17-3-6, 57 pts.) returns to the field on Saturday, Sept. 1, when the Orange and Blue host Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC at Nippert Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and the game will be televised live on WSTR 64, carried live on The Project 100.7 FM and also streamed live on ESPN+. FC Cincinnati currently has an 11-point lead in the Eastern Conference over second-place Louisville (46 pts.).
