December 16, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
FC Cincinnati News Release
FC Cincinnati have signed goalkeeper Alec Kann to a contract through the 2023 season, with a club option for 2024, the club announced today.
The 31-year-old from Decatur, Georgia spent the past five seasons with Atlanta United FC. In 2021, he made 10 combined starts in MLS and in USL with Atlanta United 2, including at TQL Stadium on July 21 when the Orange and Blue and Five Stripes played to a 1-1 draw.
"Adding talent to the goalkeeper position was a priority for us this offseason," said FC Cincinnati General Manager Chris Alright. "Alec is an experienced and athletic goalkeeper who understands what winning looks like in this league, and he's a valuable addition to FC Cincinnati."
Kann had played with Atlanta since the team's inaugural season in 2017. He started the first 18 games in Atlanta history, registering four clean sheets in the first half of the 2017 season. He joined from Sporting Kansas City when he was selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2016 MLS Expansion Draft.
He spent the 2016 season in Kansas City after being selected in stage one of the 2015 MLS Re-Entry Draft from Chicago Fire FC. While with SKC, Kann earned seven league starts in 2016 and registered two shutouts. He made his CONCACAF Champions League debut Oct. 20, 2016, against Central FC in a 3-1 victory.
Since 2015, when he made his MLS debut with Chicago, he has started and appeared in 32 MLS games, making 108 saves and recording six clean sheets. He has earned three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup wins in net, and he started and made four saves in Atlanta's 3-2 win in the 2019 Campeones Cup over Club América.
The signing of Kann marks the first free agent signing under General Manager Chris Albright since MLS free agency opened Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET.
