Fasano and Cammans Lead Vermont to 6-2 Win

Sanford, ME - Ryan Fasano pitched into the eighth inning giving up just two runs while Jeff Cammans hit a bases clearing double with two outs in the sixth to give the Mountaineers a 4-2 as they would go on to defeat the Sanford Mainers 6-2 in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Monday night. The win snapped a brief two game losing streak for Vermont and gave them the season sweep over Eastern Division Sanford.

Fasano (Stony Point, NY/Rutgers) made just two mistakes all game that resulted in runs. In the second inning, Paul Kronenfeld led off the home half of the inning with a solo homer that put Sanford up 1-0. Fasano would recover and retire nine of the next ten batters going into the fifth. In that fifth, Nick LaCroix hit a chopper in front of the mound that Fasano rushed the throw as it got away from first baseman Rob Griffith and allowed LaCroix to reach third on a three base error. He would later score on a one-out sacrifice fly from Matt Verrier as the Mainers would go up 2-0 after five innings.

In the top of the sixth Jon Hotta would lead off with a single before being thrown out trying to steal third. Then Mountaineers batters worked three straight walks from Sanford starter AJ Bazdanes to load the bases. Rob Griffith would ground out into a fielders choice that forced out Brian O'Grady at home to keep the bases loaded with two out. His groundout was followed by Derek Jones' bases loaded walk to get the Mountaineers on the board. Cammans (Jamestown, RI/URI) then laced a double down the left field line that cleared the bases to give Vermont the 4-2 lead.

Fasano would then work through the sixth and seventh giving up one hit but picking him off trying to steal third. Vermont would add two more runs on an RBI single from Griffith (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sacred Heart) as he then stole second and third. He would later score on another RBI hit from Cammans.

Spencer Jackson (Aurora, CO/Washington State) came on in relief in the eighth as Fasano neared 100 pitches. The lefty would issue a two out walk before retiring four batters in a row that including a perfect ninth inning securing the win.

Fasano (2-1) pitched seven and two-thirds innings giving up two runs, one earned, on just four hits striking out three and walking two earning the win. Bazdanes went six innings walking four and giving up four runs on seven hits in the loss.

Game Notes: Brett Johnson reached safely for the ninth straight game, he has hits in six of those...Brian O'Grady had three stolen bases upping his total to 14 which is third in the NECBL...the Mountaineers as a team had 8 steals bringing the team total to 77 which is 14 behind the franchise record of 91 set in 2003...Cammans had four RBI on the night tying for the team high with 12...Fasano has now pitched at least six innings in three straight starts going 2-0 in those starts.
