GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado - The Washington Nationals have signed GJ Rockies third baseman and former Colorado Mesa University Maverick Caleb Farmer to a Minor Leagues contract.
"It still hasn't hit me yet." Farmer said, "It's something I've always dreamed about, and now that it happened, I don't even know how to process it."
The Grand Junction Rockies signed Farmer in June following his senior year at CMU. At Colorado Mesa, Farmer batted .413 with 28 home runs. His home run total was good for second in Division II behind only teammate and DII Player of the year Haydn McGeary. These numbers garnered Farmer First Team All-Conference recognition in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, and Second-Team All-Region honors in the South Central Region. He also won an RMAC Gold Glove for his defensive work at third base.
Once acquired by the Rockies, Farmer made an immediate impact homering in his first professional at-bat. He continued his approach from CMU, getting on-base at a .429 clip and hitting six home runs for Grand Junction. While Farmer's in-game numbers were solid, he made his biggest impact in the PBL Knockout Round, winning three of the extra innings home run derbies for the Rockies.
"Yeah, I'll miss it [The KO Round]." Farmer said. "I was so nervous for the first two, but the third one I had fun, and it always got the crowd involved, and the guys fired up."
"Caleb offered us some exciting moments on the field this year, and we wish him the best with the Nationals organization and in his career to come." GJ Rockies President Mick Ritter said.
