Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Fort Worth, TX - If the Corpus Christi Rayz keep up their current pace, they might run out of dramatic ways to finish a hockey game. On Saturday night Randy Murphy launched a missile of a slapshot 4:05 into overtime to give the Rayz a 3-2 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas. The victory was the second consecutive game that the Rayz decided in the final stages of the contest. In the final meeting of the year, the Rayz took the season seires over the Brahmas 3-1. Corpus Christi has now won two in a row and will travel to Rio Grande Valley to face the Killer Bees on Sunday night.

The Brahmas got the lone goal of the first period. Cory Stillman redirected a shot past Scott Reid from the top of the crease at 8:13. Stillman's goal was his team-leading, 21st goal and 42nd point of the season. The Brahmas outshot the Rayz 8-7 in the opening period.

In the second period the Rayz swung the scoreboard back in their favor with a pair of goals 2:22 apart. Derrick McIver tallied his team-leading 18th goal on a shot into the bottom left corner from the right circle at 13:06. Bernie John and Ryan Carter got the assists on McIver's goal that tied the score at 1-1. The Rayz then took their first lead of the game on a beautiful shorthanded play. At 15:28 of the second period Chris Robertson entered the zone. He dropped the puck for McIver at the top of the circles, and then passed back and forth down the slot. After the play left Brahmas goaltender Andrew Martin out of position, Robertson banged the puck into the empty net for a goal in his third straight game. The Rayz took a 2-1 lead on their sixth shorthanded goal of the season. The Rayz penalty killing stepped up again at the end of the period when Corpus Christi killed off a Brahmas two-man advantage for 54 seconds in the final two minutes of the period. The Brahmas outshot Corpus Christi 12-10 in the frame.

The Brahmas forced overtime in the third period when Stillman got his second goal of the night at 13:10. Stillman found a loose puck in the crease and slammed it home to make the score 2-2.

In overtime, with the Rayz on a power play, Murphy uncorked a blistering slapshot from the top of the right circle that beat Martin in the high right corner to give the Rayz the win. Corpus Christi has now won two straight and improved their record to 17-26-2. The Brahmas earned a point with the overtime loss as their record moved to 13-26-7. Corpus Christi heads into Sunday trailing the Amarillo Gorillas by nine points for the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. The Rayz outshot the Brahmas 29-26. Reid earned the win for the Rayz improving his record to 11-13-1. Martin took the overtime loss and watched his record move to 2-3-2. The Rayz went 1-8 on the power play. The Brahmas went 0-6. Corpus Christi is now two for their last 75 power play opportunities, with both goals late game-winners.
