Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans welcomed the Shreveport Sports to Pelican Park Wednesday evening for their final series of the 2006 season. 1,013 fans were in attendance for Family Night to break the season attendance record set in 2005, now set at nearly 71,000 with three games remaining in the 2006 season. In the game, the Pelicans used a 9th inning two-run homer from Jose Yepez to pull within two. However, that would not be enough as the Sports won 5-3.

It was slow going for the Pelicans as the Sports jumped on the board first, scoring three runs in the top of the third. Austin Easley, Coby Brown and Neb Brown came around to score as Brown and Chad Gambill were credited with RBI. The Sports would go on to add runs in the fifth and the sixth innings to take a 5-0 lead.

Pensacola plated a run in the bottom of the sixth. Trino Aguilar led the inning off with a double and scored on a two out base hit by designated hitter George Branch. Aguilar's double ties with him Tim Dorn for the Pelicans record of 23 doubles in one season.

Jose Yepez came to the plate for the Pelicans in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and Rolo Avila on first. Yepez crushed a pitch over the centerfield wall to cut the Shreveport lead to 3-5. That is as close as it would get though and Pensacola's winning streak was snapped at two games.

Bubba Dobson replaced starting pitcher Nick Maness who left the game in the second inning after re-aggravating an injury. Dobson threw a solid 7.2 innings in relief who picked up when Maness left.
