Fort Worth dashes Blacksnakes' playoff hopes

ST. JOSEPH, MO- St. Joe (22-23, 48-45) fell to Fort Worth (31-14, 55-38), 4-2, ending the first year club's chance at the post-season. Cory Walters stifled the ‘Snakes offense in picking up his league-leading 14th victory.

Fort Worth led throughout as they scored two runs in the second and added single runs in the third and fourth before St. Joe cut into the lead. Wil Quintana's fly ball fell in the fourth for a run-scoring double to put St. Joe on the board, 4-1. Mark Burke tallied his fifth home run of the year in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-2, but St. Joe could get no closer.

Walters (14-4) limited the ‘Snakes to just five hits over seven innings, and St. Joe finished with just six hits. Donovan Graves (8-7) was hit around early, but settled in and went 7 1/3 innings for the loss.

The win also clinched the South Division Second Half title for the Fort Worth Cats.

The two teams continue the four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05pm. Game two pits Jesen Merle (4-6) for the ‘Snakes against the Cats' Dan Valentin (4-1). Gates open at 6pm and it is the final "Thirsty Thursday" promotion at Phil Welch Stadium. The broadcast starts with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show at 6:45pm at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com and at 88.9 FM at the ballpark.
