Springfield Falcons News Release
The Springfield Falcons lost to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 6-5 in a shootout on Wednesday afternoon in Bridgeport, CT. Bridgeport's Jon Sim recorded a hat trick and the game-winning goal in the fifth round of the shootout. Springfield's Matt Calvert scored twice in the game, one shorthanded goal and one power play marker.
The Falcons battled back from 3-0 and 5-3 deficits, including fighting back from two goals down in the third period to earn a point on the road. The Falcons have now collected at least a point in five of their last six games going 4-1-0-1 in that span.
"We came out flat, it was a unique starting time today and it wasn't something we were used to." said Falcons head coach Rob Riley. "I thought once we scored that goal late in the first period, we played pretty well after that. We had a chance to win at the end, David (LeNeveu) made some key stops to keep us in the game, but we will take the point."
The first period didn't start well for the Falcons as they fell behind 3-0 in the opening frame. Sim opened the scoring just 1:03 into the first period with a power play goal, followed by Justin DiBenedetto scoring at 2:57 of the first period. Sim added a second marker at 12:13 of the first period giving the Sound Tigers a 3-0 cushion.
The physical play continued throughout the first period with Tom Sestito and Travis Hamonic dropping the gloves followed by Nate Guenin and Micheal Haley going toe-to-toe a little over a minute later.
In the closing seconds of the first period, the Falcons gained some momentum when Calvert scored a shorthanded goal cutting Springfield's deficit to 3-1 after 20 minutes of play.
The Falcons continued their momentum in the second period as Maksim Mayorov cut their deficit to 3-2 at 8:23 of the second period, followed by Michael Ryan tying the score just 32-seconds later with his first goal as a Falcon.
Bridgeport regained their lead at 4-3 when David Ulstrom scored at 10:42 of the middle period, followed by Sim scoring his third goal of the game at 11:21 of the second stanza.
Trailing 5-3 in the third period, Calvert scored his second goal of the game, this time on the power play pulling the Falcons to within 5-4. Steven Goertzen scored his first goal of the year just 1:15 later evening the score at 5-5.
Midway through the third period, the Falcons appeared to have scored when Michael Blunden's shot from the right wing circle hit the far post with the referee giving the goal sign. After a conference with the goal judge, the goal was waved off and taken off the scoreboard.
