PETERBOROUGH - The Ottawa 67's opened the 2016/17 OHL season Thursday night in Peterborough scoring a 5-3 win over the Petes with contributions from both rookies and returning players. Three goals in the span of eight minutes in the second period paced the 67's to a three-goal lead that they turned into a 5-3 win back-stopped by a solid performance between the pipes from Leo Lazarev. The 67's return to Ottawa to prepare for the Barrie Colts in their much-anticipated home opener Sunday afternoon at 2p.m.

After a scoreless first period thanks to solid netminding from both goaltenders, the 67's broke the deadlock less than two minutes into the second period through Drake Rymsha. Carter Robertson, Ottawa's second round pick in the 2016 OHL Draft collected his first career OHL point assisting on the season-opening goal.

Less than seven minutes later Austen Keating, who led the team in scoring in pre-season action, made it 2-0 with Artur Tyanulin drawing the assist. Two minutes later Tyanulin got his name on the scoresheet again, this time with his first of the season with Carter Robertson earning his second assist on the night. The Petes pulled a goal back before the period was out, but Ottawa held a 3-1 lead heading into the final frame.

Kody Clark, who looked solid in his OHL debut, scored his first-career goal less than five minutes into the third thanks to a feed from Nolan Gardiner. Clark's goal not only restored Ottawa's three-goal lead, but would stand up to be the game-winner.

The Petes pulled one back midway through the third, but Rymsha's second of the night restored Ottawa's three-goal lead that saw Tyanulin and Robertson both collect helpers on the goal - for Robertson his third assist on the night to make for an impressive OHL debut.

Peterborough added a third, but that would be the final time that they would beat Lazarev on the night as the 67's netminder turned aside 29 of 32 shots. Ottawa sent 43 shots towards the Peterborough goal and went 2-for-7 on the power play on the night.

The 67's were without the services of Travis Barron and Jake Middleton due to their commitment to NHL training camps, while Sasha Chmelevski was away with USA Hockey in the All-American Prospects game tonight in Philadelphia.
