
Fabio Castro Named EL Pitcher of Week

Manchester, NH- New Hampshire Fisher Cats left-handed pitcher Fabio Castro has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 26, it was announced today. The 5'7", 180 lb. southpaw made a pair of starts for the Fisher Cats last week and went 1-0 with 17 strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA in 10 innings pitched. Castro, a native of Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, made his first start of the week last Monday night, April 20, at Connecticut, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out 10 batters over five innings. His eight consecutive strikeouts between the 2nd and 4th innings at Dodd Stadium established a franchise record.
Castro earned a no-decision in the game, which was suspended after five innings with the score tied 0-0 and will be completed on May 16. The 24-year old earned a win in his second start of the week on Saturday afternoon, April 25, at Merchantsauto.com Stadium, yielding just two runs on four hits in five innings of work in a 7-2 victory over the Binghamton Mets. He struck out seven batters, walked one and hit a batter in the win. Castro is currently ranked second in the league in strikeouts (24), fourth in ERA (0.83), fifth in WHIP (0.83) and fifth in innings pitched (21.2). He was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays on September 29, 2008, as the player to be named later in the trade with the Philadelphia Phillies for Matt Stairs on August 29, 2008.
Castro, who is in his eighth professional season, has a career minor league record of 43-22 with a 3.04 ERA in 214 games, including 36 starts. He made his Major League debut with the Texas Rangers on April 6, 2006, and has made 30 MLB appearances with the Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies, compiling a record of 0-1 with a 3.30 ERA in 43.2 innings pitched.
The Fisher Cats open a three-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday night at 6:35pm.
