
Big Phillies Ruiz to play for R-Phils

Reading, PA - Philadelphia Phillies starting catcher Carlos Ruiz is scheduled to play for the Reading Phillies on Major League rehab assignment when the R-Phils take on the Altoona Curve on Tuesday, April 28. Game time is 6:35 PM and gates open at 5:30 PM. Lefty Joe Savery, the Phillies first round pick in the 2007 draft, is scheduled to start for Reading.
Ruiz has been on the disabled list since April 11 with a right oblique strain.
Before suffering his injury Ruiz was hitting .273 (3-11) with a 2B and a BB in four games for the Phillies.
Ruiz's rehab assignment began last week with Lehigh Valley (AAA). In two games for the IronPigs he was 1-for-6 (.167) with a run and three walks. He served as the DH in his first game and caught the second game. He'll catch for Reading.
In 2008 the Panama native hit .219 (70-320) with 4 HR and 31 RBI and established himself as the Phillies top catcher with his play behind the plate. The Phillies went 55-37 (.598) in his 92 starts and the Phillies pitching staff posted a 3.83 ERA with him at catcher, third best in the National League. He started all eight post-season games for the World Champions.
Signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent 12/4/98, Ruiz played at every level in the system as he rose through the Minor Leagues. He hit .266 (45-169) in 53 games for the R-Phils in 2003. In 2004 he enjoyed a breakout season in Reading when he hit .284 (99-349) in 101 games with 17 HR (career-high) and 50 RBI. His homer total was 2nd among Eastern League catchers. In 2004 he threw out 32.9% (25-76) of base stealers.
In 263 career games in the Majors Ruiz has hit .243 (188-774) with 13 HR and 95 RBI. He hit .275 (552-2008) with 51 HR and 270 RBI in 571 career games in the Minors.
