Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

Aberdeen, MD- Marvin Lowrance hit a two run homer in the sixth inning to tie the game 2-2 and David Travis hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning for a 4-2 lead as the Vermont Expos salavaged one of three games at Aberdeen with a 4-3 victory over the Ironbirds Monday night at Ripken Stadium.

Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, Jose Contreras singled with one out and scored on Lowrance's game-tying home run to rightfield. It was Lowrance's second home run of the season and second of the series (he also homered on Friday night).

One inning later Trent Baysinger came on in relief of starter Luis Ramirez for the Ironbirds and gave up a leadoff single to Doug Vroman. Travis followed with his first home run of the season for a 4-2 Expos lead.

The Ironbirds got one run back in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run from pinch hitter Corey Shafer to cut the lead to 4-3. But Brett Campbell and Gus Hlebovy, who both pitched the ninth inning on Friday night when Aberdeen scored four runs to rally from a 9-5 deficit, were near perfect in the eighth and ninth innings on Monday.

Campbell struckout three in the eighth inning with an Ironbird reaching second on a two-base error by Lowrance, while Hlebovy tossed a perfect ninth inning for his 10th save of the season (tying him with Antonio Garris for third most in Expos history).

With the promotion of Vermont scheduled starter Jon Felfoldi to Savannah over the weekend, the Expos moved AJ Wideman up a day from his scheduled Tuesday start. Wideman, who pitched one inning last Thursday in his first appearance since July 11th, allowed just one hit with one strikeout over three innings on Monday to lower his ERA to 2.05 for the season.

Daivd Trahan relieved Wideman in the fourth inning and gave up two runs on three hits in the inning for a 2-0 Aberdeen lead. Trahan (3-1), who struckout the final two batters of the fourth with runners on first and second, picked up the win after allowing three runs on five hits over four innings with one walk and six strikeouts.

Vroman was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Vermont (22-26), while the home runs by Lowrance and Travis give the Expos 32 homers for the season (third most ever by an Expos team behind 45 in 1999 and 35 in 1994).

The one-run also improved the Expos record in one-run games to 7-10, while 24 of the Expos 48 games have been decided by one or two runs for a 13-11 record.

The Expos return home to Centennial Field to open a five-game homestand on Tuesday with the Lowell Spinners. Vermont hosts the Boston Red Sox affiliate Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before the Oneonta Tigers come to Centennial on Friday and Saturday.
