Express Sign 2 Former Division I Players
November 16, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Reading Express News Release
Reading, Pa. (November 16, 2010) - The Reading Express will begin play in the Indoor Football League in 2011 with the addition of two former NCAA Division I football players. Offensive lineman Brandon Evans and defensive lineman/linebacker Andre Mathis Jr. become the latest Express signings for the upcoming season.
Evans is a native of Houston, Texas, and is a product of the University of Houston. Evans (6' 4" 350 lbs) spent time with two different NFL teams. He was signed to the practice squad of both the Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons in 2004 and 2005.
Mathis (6' 2" 280 lbs) is a Pennsylvania native and was selected as a first team All State linebacker at Erie Cathedral Prep in 2004. He attended the University of Tennessee and was a four year performer for the Volunteers, mostly as a defensive lineman, from 2006-2009. This will be his first season of playing indoor football. His size and athleticism gives the Express some flexibility to use him at either linebacker or as a down lineman.
"Signing two Division I athletes like Andre and Brandon will only make us a better football team and also make pre-season camp this year even more competitive," said Express Head Coach Chris Thompson. "We are extremely excited to see what these two guys can do on the football field and both of them come with an extensive football background. These two additions are another reason why we can't wait for the 2011 season to get here."
Reading Express Indoor Professional Football began play in 2006 in the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pa. In five seasons, the team has amassed an overall record of 64-20 with four playoff appearances, two conference titles and the 2009 AIFA National Championship. In 2011, Reading will begin play as a new member of the Indoor Football League.
