Round Rock Express News Release
Round Rock, TXâ The Round Rock Express have been searching for one time where they put all parts of the game together.
On Monday, they found that perfect game â and then some. It all added up to a record-setting 16-1 win over the Arkansas Travelers.
The runs scored ties the club record and the margin of victory sets a new team standard. The previous high was 14, set May 26, 2002 in a 15-1 win over El Paso.
"That was good to see," manager Jackie Moore said. "Out pitchers have been pitching well, and it was great to see the offense come alive."
The Express turned a close, 3-1 game going into the seventh into a rout by scoring a combined 13 runs in the seventh and eighth.
Round Rock (48-28, 13-13 in the second half) lit the fuse of the explosion with three consecutive hits to start the seventh. After Willy Taveras singled home the first run, Mike Rodriguez cleared the bases with a bases clearing triple. When the inning finally ended, Round Rock had scored six times on seven hits
The Express again loaded the bases in the eighth, with Brooks Conrad doubling home a pair. Ivanon Coffie then delivered the record-setting RBIs with his tenth home run of the year, a three-run shot.
Hidden in the runs was an almost equally as impressive performance from starter Tim McClaskey (5-4). He very quietly allowed the single run on five hits in seven innings, and has now allowed one run in his last 14 innings against Arkansas (41-53, 8-17).
Still, the story Monday was the hitters. Three batters (Rodriguez, Todd Self and David Matranga) had three hits and six Express hitters drove in two runs or more.
Former Round Rock pitcher Nick Roberts (1-1) took the loss.
The second-place Express also gained ground on San Antonio, who lost to Frisco, 3-2 and saw their lead in the West Division shrink to three games.
The third game of the four-game series will be Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
