
Expos Lose To Renegades

The Vermont Expos lost their fourth straight game as they allowed an unearned run in the fifth inning and Hudson Valley scored three insurance run in the eighth as the Renegades shutout Vermont 4-0 in New York-Penn League action at Dutchess Stadium Wednesday night. John Bouman reached to leadoff the Hudson Valley fifth inning when Expos shortstop Ofilio Castro couldn't get the ball out of his glove on a groundball to take an error. The Renegades then got back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases, then after a strikeout, plated their first run on a sacrifice fly by Matt Spring. That run made Jon Felfoldi (0-1) a tough luck losing pitcher, allowing just the unearned run on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work. Felfoldi was now allowed just two earned runs in 11.1 innings of work in his two starts. Expos reliever Eddie Diaz struckout three Hudson Valley batters and allowed one single in his first two innings of work, but was touched for three of runs in the eighth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Spring and Patrick Cottrell, then a RBI single by Fernando Frias for a 4-0 lead. Vermont was able to muster just six hits and left nine runners on base in getting shutout for the first time this season. Expos batters finished with 13 strikeouts, including eight strikeouts from the bottom three batters in the order, and have now struckout 47 times in the last four games.
Brandon Mann (1-1) threw six shutout innings with four hits allowed, while walking three and striking out nine for his first win of the season for Hudson Valley (3-3). Fernando Perez was 3-for-4 for the Renegades, while Frias went 2-for-4. The Expos (2-4) will try to snap their four-game losing streak on Thursday night with Chris Goodman getting the start in the middle game of the three-game series at Hudson Valley. Vermont returns home to Centennial Field on Saturday night to begin a five-game homestand with the Staten Island Yankees.
