Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA --- A bad start and a bad inning made an otherwise good start for Clint Everts into a lose for Everts as the Lowell Spinners handed the Vermont Expos their eighth straight loss with an 8-2 New York-Penn League victory Monday night at LeLacheur Park.
Everts walked each of the first three batters he faced in the game, then gave up a two-run single to Jeremy West for a 2-0 Lowell lead. On the play, the Expos got Matt Murton trying to go from first to third and Clint Everts then struckout the next four batters and got a caught stealing.
The Expos got a single run in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single from Brad Ditter to score Franklyn Jimenez. Down 2-1 in the top of the fifth, Vermont had runners on second and third with one out, but Larry Wayne York lined out and Jimenez struckout to squelch the rally and leave the Expos down one.
Everts (1-4), who had allowed just the one West single and had six strikeouts over the first four innings, was then touched for two home runs and four hits in the fifth inning as Lowell scored three runs to take a 5-1 lead. Brett Bonevechio led off the inning with his second home run of the year and Robert Evans hit a two-out, two-run homer later in the fifth for his second home run and the fourth allowed by Everts all year.
Vermont added an unearned run in the seventh as Ja'Mar Clanton reached on an error, stole second and scored on a RBI single from Jason Tuttle. The single extended Tuttle's hitting streak to nine games.
Everts left after six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with three walks (to first three batters) and a team season-high nine strikeouts. Brett Reid came in the bottom of the seventh and was charged with two earned runs in the seventh and Tyler Kirkman allowed in a run in the eighth for an 8-2 Spinners lead.
Robert Evans was 2-for-2 with three runs, homer, hit by pitch, sacrifice fly and three RBI, while West was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Jason Ramos was 3-for-4. David Penny (2-0) allowed one run on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts over five innings for the win.
Jimenez and Ditter each had two hits for Vermont (7-34), which has now lost eight straight games after taking two of three from the Stedler Division-leading Oneonta Tigers July 18-20 at Centennial Field.
After an off day on Tuesday, Vermont will host those Oneonta Tigers in another three-game series at Centennial Field beginning on Wednesday night when it is KOOL 105.1 Mardi Gras Night at the ballpark.
