Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY --- Anthony Pearson lost his team-record 10th game of the season, but he didn't get much help from the Expos offense as Vermont lost 7-2 to the Staten Island Yankees on Wednesday night in New York-Penn League action at the Ballpark at St. George.

Pearson (0-10) set the new Vermont single-season loss record, passing Mark Mangum's nine losses in 1998, as he allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts. His struggle with control continued as he allowed single runs in the second and third innings to score on wild pitches for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

The Expos cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth inning on a leadoff single from Salomon Manriquez, first hit of the game for Vermont, and a RBI triple down the rightfield line by Brad Ditter. But with tying run on third with no outs, the Expos were unable to score as Oscar Bernazard struckout, Ja'Mar Clanton was out bunting and Jason Tuttle grounded out.

Staten Island then loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth on two singles and an error before Pearson struckout two straight batters. But he was unable to get the third out before allowing two unearned runs on a bases loaded walk and error by Clanton for a 4-1 Yankee lead.

Staten Island then got a solo home run from Melky Cabrera to leadoff the sixth off Tyler Kirkman and added two runs in the seventh off Chris Little to take a 7-1 lead as the Yankees leadoff batter in each of their eight innings at bat reached base (five hits, three walks).

The Expos had just four hits over the first eight innings before scoring their second run in the ninth on leadoff walk, one-out single and a two-out RBI single from Oscar Bernazard. A third ninth-inning single loaded the bases, but Tuttle grounded out to end the game.

Tuttle went 0-for-5 as the top three batters in the Expos order combined to go 0-for-13 as Franklyn Jimenez and Kory Casto both went 0-for-4. Salomon Manriquez was 2-for-4 with one run, while Josh Whitesell went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.

Jeff Kartens (3-2) allowed one run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over seven innings to pick up the victory for Staten Island (21-35), while Enrique Cruz was 3-for-5 with two runs and Cabrera had two RBI to go along with his two hits.

Vermont (13-43) was looking to win its third straight game for the first time this season, but will have to settle for trying to win two of three games at Staten Island as the teams meet in the series finale on Thursday night with Nick Long (3-6) getting the start for the Expos.
