Expos beat by Yanks

June 28, 2004 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

Burlington, VT- The Expos couldn't find that elusive third straight victory as they dropped a 6-3 decision to the Staten Island Yankees in New York-Penn League action Monday at and that meant a night in the dugout for the Vermont front office as part of "Slumper Night" at Centennial Field. Vermont (4-7) had won the first two games of the series with the Yankees and were looking to for a win Monday night for their first three-game winning streak since August 19-22, 2002. But Scott Rich was 2-for-4 with two runs and a key three-run homer for Staten Island and reliever Jesse Hoover came on to strikeout six of the seven Expos batters he faced to close out the Yankees victory. That meant a night in the dugout for the Expos front office, who had agreed to sleep at the field if Vermont lost the game. Monday's "Slumper Party" promotion was in honor of last June when General Manager C.J. Knudsen (and a member of the front office added each night) slept in the Expos dugout for seven straight nights waiting for Vermont to end a losing streak that reached 12 games. The Yankees trailed 1-0 and had just two hits when they scored twice in the top of the fifth, including an RBI double from Evan Tierce for a 2-1 lead.

Staten Island added three unearned insurance runs in the sixth inning when Rich hit his three-run homer to leftfield with two outs for a 5-1 Yankees lead. The runs were unearned when Ofilio Castro dropped a throw on what could have been the start of a double play two batters before Rich belted his first home run of the season. Vermont tried to get back into the game with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Expos left the bases loaded in both innings. Ben Jones gave the Yankees another insurance run in the eighth inning with a solo home run, his second of the season. Edgar Soto (1-0) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over 5.1 innings for the victory, while Jon Felfoldi (0-2) was touched for five runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings to take the loss for Vermont (4-7). The Expos will try and get back into the win column on Tuesday night when they host the Tri-City ValleyCats in the first of a two-game series. Chris Goodman will get the start for the Expos against the 9-2 Stedler Division leaders. It is U.S. Army Night at Centennial with camouflaged baseballs for the first 1,000 fans and the Vermont players will be wearing camouflaged jerseys.
