Montgomery Biscuits News Release
Jim Tocco, like most minor league broadcasters, aspires to one day call games at the highest level. It doesn't matter for which team, or if they are winning, as long as he is behind the mic at a ballpark with listeners clinging to his every word. Tocco's unique style of detailed description has propelled him to Double-A baseball at an alarming rate. Being just 27 years old, Tocco has tasted the pinnacle twice, having called games for the Montreal Expos at some point in each of the last two seasons.
"Calling the game (in the Major Leagues) is exactly the same," Tocco said, "but everything surrounding it is different. It is a different feel, but any game I call is exciting for me."
Tocco was one of two Double-A broadcasters that were selected to join Elliott Price in the Expos radio booth. The other was his longtime friend and colleague Joe Block, who is the play-by-play man for the Jacksonville Suns. All other guests hold positions in Triple-A.
"It was motivating to see what I'm shooting for, but it also helped me realize how special it is to be a part of Minor League Baseball."
Strangely, the best part of the week for Tocco wasn't being at the games, but seeing what big league life is really like.
"Last year I called three games in Pittsburgh, but this time, I got to experience what it is like to be a big leaguer."
Tocco called four games against the Atlanta Braves before taking the team flight to Pittsburgh to call two games against the Pirates.
"It was a week long walk in the clouds. Really, it was my equivalent to being called up to the majors. If I never make it again, at least I've called nine Major League games."
