
Explorers Re-Sign Key Member of Bullpen

SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they have re-signed set-up man Ty Marotz to a 2009 American Association contract. Marotz joins Brett Reid, Mat Kretzschmar, and Nick Singleton as returning members of an X's pitching staff that ranked 2nd in the American Association last season with a team ERA of 3.76.
Marotz, 27, posted a 3 - 5 record with a 3.13 ERA while primarily serving as the set-up man along with Mat Kretzschmar for closer Brett Reid. In 69.0 innings of work, Marotz struck out 76 batters and only allowed 26 walks while holding opponents to a .222 batting average against. Marotz made one start for Sioux City in and in his lone start; Marotz worked 5.0 innings while striking out (6) batters without giving up an earned run.
For his (4) year Independent baseball career, Marotz has a 3.27 ERA in 145.2 innings of work while striking out 142 batters to just 45 walks, while holding opposing hitters to a 2.48 batting average.
"Ty was a work horse for us out of the bullpen last season and played a big role in our success and I look for him to once again be an impact player for us this season out of the bullpen," comments manager Les Lancaster. "
The 2009 season will mark Ty's 5th season in professional baseball and 4th consecutive season as a member of the Sioux City Explorers. Marotz currently resides in Crystal Lake, IL.
