St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (February 19, 2009) - The 1860s are known for the periodic table, War and Peace, the Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln and, of course, base ball. That's right original base ball, not baseball, played with different rules and gentlemanly conduct. The Crispin Iceball Adventure Series presented by Crispin Cider, will take shape with tailgating, a party with the Chris Hawkey Band, and a Vintage Base Ball Classic between the Saint Croix Base Ball Club and a team of St. Paul Saints and local celebrities at Midway Stadium, home of the St. Paul Saints. Proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Heartland.
Crispin Natural Hard Apple Cider, along with all their friends from around the city, will open up the festivities on Saturday, February 28 at 1:30 p.m. to benefit Second Harvest Heartland. The tailgating lot will host a tailgating demonstration by talented Chefs Paul Lynch and Philip Dorwat who will dazzle stomachs of all in attendance. Recipes online at http://www.2harvest.org/events/crispin/. A tailgating competition is open to all those that consider themselves culinary artists, casual cooks or just make a mean grilled cheese. No parking lot exhibition is complete without tailgating games presented by Vita.mn. Show off your skills in frozen turkey bowling, bean bags, washers and ladder golf.
Fans can digest the cool party sounds of the Chris Hawkey Band. Hawkey is the producer and co-host of Minneapolis' popular AM radio morning show on KFAN 1130, the Powerstrip Morning Show. One of the songs from his Minutes to Memories CD can be heard each morning at the conclusion of the show in tribute to the many Americans who have served and lost their lives in the Gulf. Chris also rocks with his other band, the Bottle Rockets.
After the party ends outside it begins inside the ballpark with a classic game that will take fans back to the 1860s. The game between the Saint Croix Base Ball Club against the St. Paul Saints and local celebrities will use vintage base ball rules and jersey's. The SCBBC will wear long trouser and shield shirt. The players won't wear gloves, pitchers will throw underhand, no base stealing, balls that land fair then go foul are still fair balls and, as always, gentlemanly behavior on and off the field.
The SCBBC is made up of members of the Washington County Historical Society and play matches all around the Twin Cities/Metro area. They began play in December of 1997 when the Quicksteps challenged them to a match of 1858 rules. http://www.wchsmn.org/stcroixbbc/
The afternoon is free of charge and proceeds from Saints food vendors will be donated to Second Harvest Heartland. Fans are encouraged to donate cash, food and warm clothing. In addition, Crispin's wholesale distributor, J.J. Taylor, will match the dollar amount raised by Crispin Hard Cider for cases consumed through bars, restaurants and liquor stores for the month of February and donate it to Second Harvest Heartland. Sometimes giving back is a worthy adventure in itself.
