St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, Minn. â The Saint Paul Saints' coaching staff will have a familiar look to it in 2003. Manager George Tsamis announced today that Jarvis Brown and Jackie Hernandez, both of whom played for the Minnesota Twins, will join returnees Lamarr Rogers and T.J. Weisner as coaches in 2003.
"I've known Jarvis since we played together in the minor leagues," Tsamis said. "He is an excellent baseball man. Jackie coached with me in New Jersey the past two seasons. We also know each other well. Lamarr and T.J. have spent a lot of time here. I'm looking forward to working with them this summer."
Brown, 35, was a teammate of Tsamis in the Twins' minor league system in the 1980s. He was a member of the Twins' 1991 World Series champs and also played here in 1992. (Tsamis pitched for theTwins in 1993.) He also saw action with San Diego, Atlanta and Baltimore. After his playing days ended, Brown spent three seasons coaching in the Twins' system and served as hitting coach last year at Newark (Atlantic League). He will serve in that same capacity with the Saints this year.
Hernandez played for the Twins in 1967-68 as part of a 618-game, nine-year career in the major leagues. A shortstop, he assisted on the final putout for Pittsburgh's 1971 World Series winning team. In addition to the Twins and Pirates, Hernandez also played with California and Kansas City. His coaching resume includes a Northern League stint with Duluth-Superior in 1998-99. He spent the past four seasons as coach with Tsamis at Waterbury and New Jersey. He will handle the third base coaching duties.
Rogers, who will coach first base, is returning for his fifth season as a coach and his seventh overall with the Saints. The Burnsville, MN resident first joined the organization as a player in 1997. In two years with the team, he hit ..320 and set a team record with 49 stolen bases. He will work with the base runners in addition to his first base duties.
Wiesner is back for his seventh season as the team's bullpen coach. Prior to that time, the St. Paul native served as the bullpen catcher for the Minnesota Twins from 1985-96. Tsamis, who begins his first season as manager when training camp opens May 9, is expected to name a pitching coach soon.
