Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
MONTREAL, Quebec - Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing of free agent goaltender Marc Denis to a one-year, two-way American Hockey League / National Hockey League contract for the 2008-2009 season. As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Denis, 30, is preparing for his 12th season as a professional. The native of Montreal, Quebec made his professional debut in 1996-1997, when he competed in one NHL regular season game with the Colorado Avalanche and in four AHL post-season games with the Hershey Bears, who defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs in the Calder Cup Finals to capture the championship.
A 10-year NHL veteran, Denis has played for the Colorado Avalanche (28 games from 1996-2000), Columbus Blue Jackets (266 games from 2000-2006) and Tampa Bay Lightning (54 games from 2006-2008). Last season, Denis appeared in 10 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning (1-5-0, 4.05 goals against average, .859 save percentage) and in 32 games with the Norfolk Admirals (11-17-2, 2.91 goals against average, .910 save percentage).
In 348 career NHL regular season games, the 6'1", 193-pound goaltender has a record of 112 wins, 179 losses, 28 ties and three overtime losses, with a 3.02 goals against average, a .902 save percentage and 16 shutouts. In 131 career AHL regular season games with the Hershey Bears (99 games from 1997-1999) and Norfolk Admirals (32 games in 2007-2008), Denis has a record of 48 wins, 73 losses, 11 ties and two shootout losses, a 2.87 goals against average, a .908 save percentage and six shutouts.
Selected in the first round, 25th overall by the Colorado Avalanche at the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Denis has represented Canada on four occasions, winning three championships. Denis helped Canada capture gold medals at the 1996 and 1997 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-20 Championships and was voted Top Goaltender of the 1997 World Junior Championships.
In operation since 1936, the American Hockey League continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 84 percent of today's NHL players are AHL graduates, and for the seventh year in a row, more than 6 million fans attended AHL games across North America in 2007-2008.
