Canadiens Trade Grabovski to Maple Leafs

MONTREAL, Quebec - Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey today announced the acquisition of defenceman Greg Pateryn along with the Toronto Maple Leafs' second round pick in 2010 in return for forward Mikhail Grabovski.

Pateryn, 18, was selected by Toronto in the fifth round, 128th overall, in the 2008 National Hockey League Entry Draft. In 2007-2008, his first season in the United States Hockey League, the 6'2", 212-pound defenceman led all Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets defencemen with 27 points (3 goals, 24 assists) and finished first on the team with 145 penalty minutes in 60 games. The native of Royal Oak, Michigan native was also named to the Eastern Division Team in the USHL Prospects / All-Star Game and received USHL Defensive Player of The Week honours in March.

Pateryn will join the University of Michigan for the 2008-2009 season.

Grabovski, 24, was selected by the Montreal in the fifth round, 150th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. The 5-foot-11, 183-pound centre split his first two seasons as a professional in North America between the Canadiens and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs. In 2007-2008, the native of Potsdam, Germany skated in 24 games with Montreal and registered nine points (three goals, six assists) and eight penalty minutes. In 12 games with Hamilton last season, Grabovski posted 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) and six penalty minutes and was selected as the RBK / AHL Player of the Week for the period ending February 17th, 2008. Grabovski also set a ‘Dogs franchise record when he was named first star in five consecutive games from February 15th - 20th.

In 27 career regular season NHL games, Grabovski has accumulated nine points (three goals, six assists) and eight penalty minutes. In 78 career regular season AHL games, the German-born and Belarussian-raised skater has picked up 74 points (25 goals, 49 assists) and 40 penalty minutes. In the 2007 Calder Cup Playoffs, Grabovski helped the Hamilton Bulldogs capture their first AHL championship by chipping in with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and 21 penalty minutes in 20 games.
