Evansville IceMen News Release

INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Evansville IceMen scored five goals against the team with the best home record in the ECHL, but came up short Tuesday at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena, when the Missouri Mavericks topped the IceMen 6-5 in overtime. Evansville earned five out of a possible six points in the first half of a six-game road trip.

Missouri found the net on its first power play, when Andrew Courtney carried the puck into the zone on the left wing and fired a quick shot into the top corner over the glove of IceMen goalie Cody Reichard 3:30 into the game. Evansville tied the game 49 seconds later, when Vincent Dunn snapped a shot into the top shelf while falling to his knees in the slot.

1:22 after Dunn's goal, Danny Hobbs ripped a shot over the blocker of Missouri goaltender Josh Robinson from the right circle to give the IceMen the lead. Then Chris Rumble added to the lead with 42 seconds left in the first period, when his shot from the point made it through a screen and into the net on a power play.

The Mavericks scored three goals in the first 7:07 of the second period to regain the lead and chase Reichard from the net. First, Zach Cohen redirected a shot from the point into the net to cut Evansville's lead to one. Next, Matt Finn found a loose puck behind the IceMen net and lifted a backhander into the net on a wraparound to tie the game 3-3. 11 seconds later, Reichard played the puck from behind his net, but Tanner Fritz intercepted the pass and put the Mavericks back in the lead.

Backup goaltender Christoffer Bengtsberg came into the game at that point and finished the contest. Evansville tied the score at 12:05 of the second period when Andrew Himelson jammed in a loose puck in the crease for his first goal of the season, as the two teams skated into the intermission knotted up at 4-4.

The IceMen captured the lead again 5:09 into the third when Daultan Leveille fired a wrist shot over Robinson's glove for Evansville's second power play goal of the game. But Missouri answered again, this time on a 5-on-3 man advantage. Rocco Carzo snuck a puck past Bengtsberg on the goal line and forced overtime.

For the second time this season, the Mavericks found the magic in overtime, as Fritz fired a wrist shot over the blocker 42 seconds into the extra period. With his 17th consecutive win, Robinson broke an ECHL record, although he allowed five goals on 29 shots. Reichard and Bengtsberg combined for 25 saves on 31 shots.

Evansville next plays the Wichita Thunder at 7:05pm Wednesday at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita. The IceMen then travel to Indianapolis for two games Friday and Saturday against the Indy Fuel to wrap up the six game road trip.
