Washington Wild Things News Release

(WASHINGTON, PA) – The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, were edged by the Evansville Otters 3-2 in front of the 12th-straight sellout crowd at Falconi Field Friday night.

Washington jumped on the board in the second inning, but Evansville took the lead in the top of the fifth. Scott Ward and Steve Martin hit back-to-back singles to set the table. Frank Scott followed with a single to right field and a collision at home between Ward and Washington catcher Andy Barden caused the ball to bounce away allowing Martin to score as well.

However, Washington battled back, using a Jack Headley RBI single in the seventh. Matt Bok, signed only a day ago, doubled down the line in the bottom of the ninth, but Washington was unable to tie the game.

Amad Stephens picked up his league-leading 14th save for Evansville, and A.J. Ampi earned the victory in relief. Washington started Matt McDonnell pitched six innings allowing just one earned run and striking out eight. However, he earned a no decision and reliever Ryan Hartzell shouldered the loss.

The defeat drops Washington to 30-18, while Evansville moves one-half game ahead of Washington into first place with a record of 31-18.

The Frontier League All-Star Game is scheduled for Wednesday, July 14, and Washington is sending six players (Brian Stoecklein, L.J. Biernbaum, Jack Headley, Jon Cahill, B.J. Borsa and Matt Powell) and the coaching staff (John Massarelli, Ryan Ellis and Mark Mason). The Wild Things are sending more representatives to the game than any other team in the East Division.

The Wild Things travel to Florence for a 7:05 p.m. game Saturday night.
