June 30, 2020 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Eugene Emeralds News Release
Major League Baseball has informed Minor League Baseball that it will not be providing its affiliated Minor League teams with players for the 2020 season, officially canceling the entire 2020 Minor League Baseball season. This marks the first time a Minor League Baseball season has been canceled since its inception in 1901.
"The Northwest League, under the direction of MLB and MiLB, officially announces the cancellation of the 2020 season," said North Johnson, President of the Northwest League. "We are all disappointed that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused this unprecedented decision, but know our dedicated and professional Eugene staff will plan and prepare for an amazing 2021 season."
"Today marked an unseen period in Minor League Baseball history - there will not be a season played in 2020," said Allan Benavides, General Manager of the Eugene Emeralds. "While we are heartbroken that we will not be able to provide our community the tremendous baseball experience in 2020 that they have come to expect here at PK Park, for the safety of our fans, players and staff, we fully support this decision. The Emeralds, along with all of professional baseball, will remain united and optimistic because baseball will return. Our thoughts continue to remain with those fighting on the front lines each day to ensure the safety of the public."
"We would also like to sincerely thank our partners, season seat members, fans, and the community for all of the incredible support over these past few weeks," Benavides continued. "We will continue to look at ways to host events of some scale for the local community over the summer, with the proper health and safety precautions put into effect. Additionally, we have already begun planning for our 2021 season and cannot wait to invite our wonderful fans back to the ballpark for some baseball."
While these are certainly unprecedented times for our country, the Eugene Emeralds will continue to remain focused on helping our local community get through this. We are Eugene.
