Etheridge Shuts Down OC to Open Playoffs

WAILUKU, Hawai'i (September 7, 2010) - The Orange County Flyers offense struggled to find it regular-season form against Maui's Wes Etheridge in a 4-1 loss in the opening game of the South Division Series. Maui now leads the best-of-five series, 1-0.

Etheridge (1-0) out-dueled Flyers' starter Manny Ayala with a complete game, allowing one unearned run on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Ayala (0-1) worked six innings and allowed three runs off six hits with four strikeouts in a losing effort.

Maui struck first on a two-run homerun by Jermy Acey, providing them all the runs they would need on the night. Mark Okano added a fifth inning RBI-single, and Phil Avlas drove in another in the eighth off Bryan Harris, who worked the final two innings for Orange County.

Sergio Pedroza singled to lead off the second inning for the Flyers, and advanced to third base on an error before former Major Leaguer Keith Ginter drove him home with a single to right field.

The Flyers had their chances to add more runs off Etheridge, with the bases loaded and one out later in the second inning and runners in scoring position with one out in the fourth inning. Each time, Orange County - a team that was second in the GBL with a .301 team batting average during the regular season - couldn't get a run across.

The Orange County Flyers continue the best-of-five playoff series against Na Koa Ikaika Maui on Tuesday, September 7 at Iron Maehara Stadium. Orange County will host Game 3 of the series on Friday, September 10 at 7:05pm at Goodwin Field. OC will host Games 4 and 5, if necessary, on September 11 and 12.
