Caps Congratulate Top 2010 Performers
September 8, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - Their performance as a team over the course of the 2010 Golden Baseball League season didn't translate into a playoff berth, but the Edmonton Capitals certainly had some fantastic individual achievements this year that deserved recognition.
Following their season-ending road trip to Victoria that saw them sweep the Seals in three games and finish the year with a 51-38 record, the Caps returned to Edmonton on Tuesday and had a team meal and awards ceremony. The team named its most valuable player, outstanding pitcher, unsung hero and recognized a player for his community service.
Two Caps were actually named co-MVPs, as left fielder Larry Bigbie and first baseman Cliff Brumbaugh were recognized for their all-around contributions to the team. Bigbie led the GBL with a .403 batting average and also hit 16 home runs with 74 RBI. Brumbaugh led the league in home runs with 23, and also had a .383 batting average with 90 RBI.
In addition to their offensive dominance, the Caps also had some outstanding performances on the mound this season, and Lou Pote was selected as the team's most valuable pitcher. The former World Series champion with the Anaheim Angels was by far the league-leader in strikeouts with 123. The Sherwood Park resident also compiled a 9-3 record with a 3.68 earned-run average.
The Caps also recognized the player who contributed the most to the team while getting the least recognition, as infielder Alex Chavez won the unsung hero award. Chavez earned the occasional start but was used primarily as a pinch hitter, pinch runner or defensive substitution in key situations. He finished the year with a .262 average and 13 RBI.
And last but not least, the Caps recognized the player who performed the most community service over the course of the 2010 season. From performing as superhero mascot Captain Capital at the Stollery Children's Hospital to donating his time at Edmonton's Food Bank, pitcher Mike Hrynio was never one to shy away from a chance to give back to the people of Edmonton.
The Caps officially close out the 2010 season today when the players clean out their lockers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at TELUS Field, and most will return home to the United States and Central America, with a few exceptions who live elsewhere in Canada or in the Edmonton area.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats for 2011 are now available, and individual game tickets will be available next season for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
