All-Star to Rejoin Flyers for Playoffs
September 8, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release
WAILUKU, Hawai'i (September 8, 2010) - The Orange County Flyers have worked a deal to bring reliever Mike Koons back to the Flyers from the Victoria Seals for a player to be named later. Koons is expected to rejoin the team on Friday for Game 3 of the GBL South Division Series in Fullerton at Goodwin Field.
Flyers manager Paul Abbott and executive VP of player personnel Harris Tulchin worked the deal with Victoria to return the 2010 All-Star to fill the void left by Mark Prior who was signed by the Texas Rangers during the last week. Prior originally took the roster spot vacated by Koons when he was dealt to the Seals in early August to complete a pre-season trade for slugger Sergio Pedroza.
Koons was 4-1 with the Flyers with a 3.50 ERA in 28 games with the Flyers to begin the season. In 36 innings of work with OC, he struck out 36 batters while walking 21. Since joining the Seals, Koons has yet to log a decision with 12 innings of work and an ERA of 7.50 in 13 relief appearances. Earlier in 2010, Koons set a new Flyers franchise record with 16 and 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, breaking the old franchise mark of 16 innings that had stood since 2005. He represented the Flyers at the International Minor League All-Star Game between the Golden Baseball League and the Northern League on July 14, his first career All-Star selection.
The Orange County Flyers take on Na Koa Ikaika Maui tonight, Wednesday, September 8, in Game 2 of the best-of-five South Division Series. Maui currently leads the series, 1-0. The Flyers return home on Friday, September 10 at 7:05pm at Goodwin Field for Game 3 of the series. Games 4 and 5, if necessary, would be held on Saturday at 7:05pm and Sunday at 5:05pm in Fullerton.
