OMAHA - The Omaha Royals and the Nebraska State Treasurer's Office are pleased to host the 5th annual essay contest "Why I Want to Go to College." Meanwhile, the Royals and Nebraska Wesleyan University are also excited to announce a new program this season to honor outstanding student athletes.

For the essay contest, any 7th or 8th grade student in Nebraska is invited to write an essay of no more than 750 words about their educational goals and dreams for the future. The goal of the contest is to encourage students to recognize the importance of a college education.

Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each of the three Nebraska Congressional Districts. First place winners will receive $1,000 towards one of Nebraska's College Savings Plans, four tickets to the Nebraska-Creighton game at Rosenblatt Stadium on Tuesday, May 15th, four Henry Doorly Zoo passes and a night's stay at a premier hotel in the Omaha area. Second and third place winners receive $500 and $300, respectively, towards the college savings plans, as well as the NU-CU game tickets and zoo passes.

Each essay should be sent to the Omaha Royals office, care of Angela Mullen, at 1202 Bert Murphy Avenue, Omaha, NE 68107. The essays must be postmarked by Friday, April 20th, and will be judged by the University of Nebraska-Omaha Education Department. The winners will be selected and notified in early May.

The Student Athlete of the Game will honor area high school juniors who are not only excellent athletes, but also show leadership in the classroom and community. Athletic Directors along with teachers are being invited to submit the names of one male and one female student athlete they would like to represent their school.

Those student athletes will be invited to a Royals game in April or May and be honored on the field at Rosenblatt Stadium prior to the game. Along with a complimentary ticket to the game, the student athletes will be given a plaque on behalf of Nebraska Wesleyan University and the Omaha Royals.
