Esks release Charbonneau

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos today released non-import defensive lineman Steve Charbonneau. The 10-year CFL veteran spent the last five seasons with the Esks after signing as a free agent with Edmonton in 2002. Charbonneau started 17 games in 2006, recording 27 defensive tackles and four sacks.

Charbonneau played his college football at New Hampshire and was Montreal's first round pick (6th overall) in the 1997 CFL Canadian Draft. He played five seasons for the Alouettes where he quickly became one of Quebec's most popular athletes.

Eskimo Head Coach Danny Maciocia says, "Steve expressed a desire to play in Eastern Canada in order to be closer to his family and business interests. He's been a consummate professional for the Eskimos, both on and off the field."

Steve Charbonneau says, "I'm very grateful to the entire Eskimo organization, especially Coach Maciocia whom I've known since I entered the CFL, for allowing me to be part of two Grey Cup victories and to play for fans who are so passionate about their team."
