Edmonton Elks News Release
Most years the annual Labour Day game in Calgary would be the half way point in a season, a sign that the CFL season was heading for the stretch drive. The 2010 version of the Classic is game #2 in Edmonton's "new season" which kicked off with last weeks' 17 - 14 win over Saskatchewan at Commonwealth Stadium. The win pushed the 2 - 6 Esks into sole possession of third place in the CFL west, two points up on the BC Lions.
Edmonton defence is coming off its best outing yet, holding Saskatchewan's offence to just seven points. They'll need a command performance against the CFL leading Stampeders (7 - 1) who have won five straight and are 4 - 0 against divisional rivals this year. Calgary QB Henry Burris has a league best 18 TDs and no shortage of weapons with the likes of Lewis, Reynolds and Bryant.
With All-Star receiver Fred Stamps still sidelined, Edmonton's offence has struggled to hit its stride. Jared Zabransky lit a spark last week, but a late game drive engineered by Ricky Ray and Jason Barnes demonstrated yet again that Ray gives Edmonton it's best chance to win game in and game out.
The sting from the Esks last visit to McMahon is still fresh, a 56 - 15 pasting on August 15th. Edmonton has dropped it's last four to the Horsemen and haven't won in Calgary since September 1, 2008. Since 1949 the Eskimos have won 28 of the 49 Labour Day meetings with the Stampders.
These two teams will travel north up the QE2 for the Labour Day Classic Rematch on Friday night (kickoff at 7pm).
