Edmonton Elks News Release

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have signed import defensive back Niles Brinkley and import wide receiver Syndric Steptoe, the club announced today.

Brinkley was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2011, and attended training camp before being released. Niles played his college football at the University of Wisconsin. At Wisconsin he recorded 126 tackles (104 solo) and 2 sacks. In his senior year he led the Badgers in pass breakups.

Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman says, "Niles is a very physical player. As we prepare for the 2012 season, improving our tacking in the secondary is one of our top priorities, and that is clearly one of Niles' strengths. He tackles well in space and plays screens and the run like a undersized linebacker."

Steptoe was drafted in the seventh round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. In 16 games with the Browns Syndric recorded 19 receptions for 182 yards; he also recorded three tackles. After being released from the Browns, he spent time with the Hartford Colonials of the UFL in 2010. The Texas native played his college football at Arizona where he registered 131 catches for 1584 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also returned 80 kickoffs for 1757 yards, and 61 punts for 690 yards and two touchdowns.

Eric Tillman says, "Syndric is a high character guy who will be a competing to fill the role vacated by Jason Armstead. We feel he will provide strong competition as a returner and as a complimentary receiver in certain offensive packages."
