Esch Pitches Another Gem in Win over Birds

JUPITER, FL - There is no doubt that Jake Esch has been the Hammerheads' best starter this month and the righty posted another great outing on Wednesday. Esch finished his season on a high note picking up the win as the Sharks to a 4-2 win over Palm Beach at Roger Dean Stadium.

After tossing a 1-2-3 first inning, Esch allowed a pair of runs in the second inning before settling down. He pitched seven innings and allowed just the two runs on five hits. He pitched to contact striking out three while issuing just one walk. It was his 12th quality start of the season.

Esch finished the month of August with a 1.30 ERA, currently the best mark among qualifying starters this month. He allowed just five earned runs in 34.2 innings this month with 27 strikeouts and just four walks.

After a rough start to the season, Esch has been terrific in his last 11 starts posting a 2.07 ERA in that span, the fourth best in the league. His 69.2 innings pitched is second most in the league in that stretch.

Esch, whose ERA was at 6.14 on June 22nd, will finish the season with a 6-6 record and a 4.05 ERA.

The Hammerheads helped provide their starter some support in the third inning on Wednesday. Noah Perio started things when he reached on a single. Anthony Gomez would then follow by hitting a laser into the gap in left-center that rolled all the way to the wall as Perio motored around to score.

Later with runners on the corners, Yosmany Guerra tied the game when he singled to left-center.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Blake Barber would pull a single to left. Goetz hustled from second and beat throw home sliding in as the Sharks took a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Jupiter would pick up an insurance run in the seventh on a sac fly by Matt Juengel and Colby Suggs and Sean Donatello combined to strikeout five of the seven batters they faced to preserve the win.

With the win the Hammerheads finished the season 6-11 against Palm Beach.

The Sharks will travel to Fort Myers for a pair of games starting on Thursday before heading back to Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday for the final two games of the season.
