Hickory Crawdads News Release

Rome, GA - The Hickory Crawdads proved to be their own worst enemy Friday night, as two costly Hickory errors transformed into six unearned runs for the Rome Braves resulting in a 7-3 'Dads loss at State Mutual Stadium.

A throwing error by first baseman Ronald Guzman in the 3rd extended the inning and helped the Braves to two unearned tallies, while a throwing miscue by Luis Marte in the 4th opened the door for five total Rome runs, four unearned. The loss snaps an 11-game road, winning streak for the Crawdads and also marks the team's first loss to the Braves this season after five straight wins.

Rome jumped on the scoreboard first in the 3rd, with the Braves using Guzman's throwing error to extend the inning to Tanner Krietemeier who lined a 2-out, 2-RBI triple inside the first base bag for a 2-0 score. The Crawdads immediately answered in the top of the 4th, when Travis Demeritte lined an opposite field, 2-run home run to right-center to tie the game at 2-2.

The deadlocked score wouldn't last long however, as Rome came back with a five-run bottom of the 4th to re-take the lead. The Braves combined Marte's throwing error at third base with a 2-RBI double by Sal Giardina, a RBI single from Johan Camargo, and a 2-RBI double by Krietemeier to plate five total runs, one earned, and take a 7-2 advantage.

Hickory scored the final tally in the 7th, when Michael De Leon brought home Marte on a RBI groundout for the final 7-3 score.

De Leon finished the game 1-3 with a double, two walks, and a RBI, while Marte went 2-4 with a run scored and Kellin Deglan ended the night 2-4 with a double and a run scored. Demeritte went 1-4 with his South Atlantic League leading 19th home run of the season.

Braves starting pitcher Matt Marksberry (1-6) earned his first win of the year after holding the 'Dads to two runs on six hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts over five innings pitched. Crawdads starting pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez (5-4) took the hard-luck loss after giving up seven runs, only one earned, on eight hits over four innings pitched.

The Crawdads (14-9) and Braves (6-17) will play again Saturday night in game three of the four game series at 7:00 pm.
