Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - John Poppert and Leonard Davis combined for two home runs and three RBI, but unearned runs hurt the Sand Gnats as they dropped the series finale to the Columbus Catfish, 4-3, Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Savannah starter Craig Stammen lasted 6.2 innings on the hill and gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in a no-decision. Brett Reid suffered the loss as he gave up the game-winning home run to Shane Justis in the top of the ninth.
Poppert struck first for the Gnats in the bottom of the third when he lined Dave Horlacher's offering to left, knotting the game at 1-1. The long ball was Poppert's sixth this year and his third in his last three games.
Davis put Savannah on top in the sixth when he drilled his seventh home run of the season over the wall in left for a two-run shot. The homer brought home Edgardo Baez, who reached on a single, giving Davis 30 RBI on the season.
Columbus got on the board first when Lucas May took Stammen deep to left with two outs in the second. The Catfish then tied the game as Bridger Hunt scored an earned run in the fifth and another in the seventh before Justis came through with the game-winning shot.
Savannah now hits the road for a seven-game trip, beginning with a four-game series at Rome starting Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. The Gnats are next back at Historic Grayson Stadium on Wednesday, July 12, with a three-game set against Columbus.
