Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen, TX - Harlingen WhiteWings (3-7) third baseman Ryan Fox made a throwing error on what could have been the last out of a win to allow the Laredo Broncos (5-5) to come from behind in the ninth to win 7-5 tonight at Harlingen Field.

Up 5-3 entering the ninth, the WhiteWings turned to closer Derek Bennett (1-2) for the third-straight game. Johnny Lopez led off with a single. One out later, Dwayne White walked and Arnoldo Ponce singled to load the bases. Luany Sanchez then hit a single to right to score pinch-runner Ben Day. White tried to score as well, but was thrown out at the plate by Bub Bergstrom to preserve the lead. Edgard Clemente then hit a chopper to third for what could have been the final out, but Fox's throw eluded first baseman Brian Nichols' glove, allowing Ponce and Sanchez to score to give the Broncos a 6-5 lead and hang Bennett with his third blown save and second in as many games. One batter later, Ivan Reyes hit an RBI-single to give the Broncos a 7-5 lead.

Benny Cepeda struck out two in a perfect ninth for his first save.

The WhiteWings got on the board first for the fourth-straight game. With two outs in the second, Kevin Griffin singled against Andy Schon (1-1). Terry Roblez hit a two-run home run on the next pitch, his third of the season, to make it 2-0. All of Roblez' homers have come against Laredo.

The Broncos quickly tied it up against Evoniuk in the top of the third. With one out, Anthony Bennett walked. White and Ponce followed with singles to load the bases. Sanchez then hit an RBI-single and Clemente hit an RBI-ground out to make it 2-2.

Nichols gave the WhiteWings the lead back with a towering home run over the right field wall, his fourth of the season.

With two outs in the sixth, Griffin doubled, Roblez hit an RBI-double, and Argelis Nunez hit an RBI-single to make it 5-2.

The Broncos got one back in the eighth against Caleb Balbuena. Sanchez led off with a single and Clemente grounded into what could have been a double play, but second baseman Candelario Perez threw the ball away, allowing Clemente to go to second. A balk moved Clemente to third and he scored on a two-out single by Reyes to make it 5-3.

The WhiteWings and Broncos play game two of this three-game set tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Alex Gett (0-1) will make his first start for the WhiteWings, taking on Santo Hernandez (1-0).
