Aces Escape Slugfest with Win over Colts

San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - For almost four hours, the San Angelo Colts fought an uphill battle. And for a brief moment, they had reached the top, coming all the way back from deficits of 5-0 and 11-5. But the Colts could never take the lead, and quickly elation turned to heartbreak as Patrick O'Sullivan hit a two-run home run off closer Brian Daly in the top of the ninth to give the Alexandria Aces a 13-11 win at Foster Field.

O'Sullivan's United League-leading seventh homer of the season gave him a league-leading 23 RBIs as well, as he went five-for-six with seven runs batted in to pace the Alexandria attack. All nine Aces batters had at least one hit, as Alexandria (5-5) banged out 19 hits against four Colts pitchers. The homer came after Bryan Sabatella singled to right off Daly (0-1), who came in for the third straight day.

San Angelo tied the game at 11-11 after John Anderson singled off Aces reliever Felipe Garcia (3-1) in the eighth, to bring home John Beal, who walked and stole second. The Colts (5-5) got five runs in the seventh to start their latest comeback, but Jose Torres, who homered to start the frame, grounded into a 5-3 double play to end it, leaving the Colts trailing 11-10 at that point.

The Aces got on the board first, scoring two runs in the first, one in the second, and two more in the third to get off to a 5-0 lead against starter Caleb Rodgers. On the night, Rodgers allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in just four and one-third innings. San Angelo battled back with four in the fourth, including a two-run double by Anderson. The Colts second baseman had four RBIs and four hits.

Brandon Kling relieved Rodgers and allowed two inherited runners to score in the fifth, as well as three more runs of his own in the seventh. Justin Robinson was the only Colts hurler to not allow a run, as he got out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth.

San Angelo had a chance to tie the game in the ninth, with a pair of singles by Jason Crosland and Benny Craig putting the tying runs aboard. But Juan Carlos Ovalles picked up his third save of the season by striking out Andres Rodriguez and Torres.

Notes: Every Colts hitter also had at least a hit, and they batted around twice, sending 10 men to the plate in the fifth and eighth innings...Anderson batted leadoff for the first time this season, replacing Tyrone Pendergrass, who sat out for the first time this season after being ejected last night...The time of the game (4:02), combined runs (24) and hits (36) were all season highs for the Colts...Two Alexandria hurlers, lefties Jeremy Cameron (left leg) and Ramon Portillo (left hand) both left with injuries after being struck by batted balls.

The Colts continue this six-game homestand at Foster Field with game two of this three-game series against the Alexandria Aces at 7:05 p.m. CT on Saturday, May 24. For that game, Arroyo Square Apartments sponsors a baseball keychain giveaway for the first 1,000 fans through the gate.
