Error Dooms Tornadoes
May 20, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The game appeared to be sloppy, with six errors dominating much of the scoring activity in the game. Tornado third baseman Johnny Welch made the critical one though in the seventh, that lead to a five Bears rally in the seventh inning.
The rally put the Bears up for good as they win the final game of the series 9-6.
Tornado starter Kevin Cooper looked good before things got out of hand in the seventh inning. He got tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs, even though four of them were earned. The Tornadoes four errors did not help his cause, either.
Mike Mullen didn't provide much relief either, after giving up the go ahead runs on a single by Bears third baseman Burt Reynolds. He went on to hit the next two batters before Chip Plante had seen enough.
Bears southpaw Matt Fitton earned the win after pitching 2 2/3 scoreless relief innings. He came in the Tornadoes chased starter Alex Smith during a five run burst in the fifth inning.
Jose Canseco provided a positive, though. He recorded his first multi-hit game of the season, which included an RBI single that scored two more, thanks to a throwing error by right fielder Courtney Billingslea.
Chris Monger had two hits of his own, as the Tornadoes ended the game with 11 hits, the second time they have had double digit hits in a game.
The Tornadoes end their short road trip losing three out of four. They return home for a quick three game series with the Cam-Am League Champion Quebec Capitales. Pitcher Phil Negus will get the start for Worcester. Check out all the action on USTREAM.tv.
