York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution grabbed their second straight win, and fifth in the last five games, with a 3-2, 12-inning walk-off victory over the Road Warriors at Campbell's Field in Camden, NJ. The win improves York to 5-6, while the Road Warriors drop to 2-9 on the season.
The Road Warriors scored first in the top of the second when Vito Chiaravalotti cracked his second homerun over the left-field fence, putting the Revs down 1-0.
York answered in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Luis Lopez reached on a pop-up then fell into shallow center for a hit. Russ Cleveland then walked, and Willie Matos drove home Lopez with a single to center, tying the game at 1-1.
The Road Warriors retook the lead at 2-1 in the fourth. David Housel led off with a single to left, and moved to second on Sandy Aracena's left-field single. With one out, Omar Garcia ripped the third single of the inning to left-field, scoring Housel to put the Road Warriors back on top.
Road Warriors starter Carlos Castillo finished his afternoon after five strong innings, allowing one run, five hits, two walks, and striking out four. Lefty reliever Aric LeClair, who faced the Revs seven days ago as a Camden Rivershark, opened the bottom of the sixth by allowing a leadoff double down the left-field line to Nate Espy. Rayner Bautista immediately followed with a double of his own down the left-field line, scoring Espy to tie the game at 2-2.
Ryan Baerlocher held the Road Warriors in check, firing eight strong innings. He allowed just two runs on seven hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out 11. The strikeout total establishes a new high for a Revolution pitcher, and Baerlocher now has 23 strikeouts compared to just two walks on the season.
York threatened with runners at first and second in both the eighth and ninth innings, but could not score. In the ninth, the Revs had two on with one out, but Travis Hake lined out to the second baseman Ron Fenwick who flipped to Gabe Suarez covering from short for an inning-ending double play. Lopez hit what appeared to be a potential game-winning homerun in the eleventh, but the strong winds held the ball in the park, maintaining the tie score.
Jason Olson kept the game tied with three perfect relief innings, working the ninth, tenth, and eleventh. Olson struck out three, and did not allow a base runner.
Chris Cooper followed with a scoreless twelfth, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Peter Bergeron, batting first in Chris Hoiles' lineup for the second straight game, led off the bottom of the twelfth with a double down the left field line. Hake then hit a sharp groundball to short which was fielded cleanly by Suarez. The throw, however, sailed into the Revs first-base dugout, allowing Bergeron to score the winning run, as the Revs came away with the 3-2, 12 inning victory.
Cooper (1-1) was the winning pitcher. Benito Baez (0-1) took the loss for the Road Warriors, despite allowing no earned runs in two-plus innings on the mound. The winning run was unearned.
The game, which moved quickly threw the regulation innings, was played in three hours and two minutes. A storm system moving through the area caused windy conditions in the eleventh and twelfth innings, but play was never halted.
The Revs posted a new high with 15 strikeouts as a team. Housel and Estee Harris each struck out four times.
Hake was three-for-six for the Revs, and is now five-for-ten over the last two games. Espy was two-for-four with a double and a run scored. Travis Ezi also doubled for York. The Revs posted four doubles as a team in the game.
York opens a three-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers at Clipper Magazine Stadium Friday night. It is the inaugural game in the "War of the Roses" series. The Revs will wear York White Roses throwback uniforms. The Barnstormers will sport Lancaster Red Roses throwback uniforms. First pitch on Friday night is set for 7:05 p.m., and fans in York can catch all the action LIVE beginning at 6:05 p.m. on NEWSRADIO 910 WSBA, or ONLINE at www.yorkrevolution.com.
