Ducks Drop Series Opener To Somerset

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 15, 2007) - The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 13-6 on Tuesday at Citibank Park.
Somerset's Mike Lockwood led the offensive charge with a 3-for-5 night at the plate, finishing just a single shy of the cycle. The rightfielder scored three runs and drove in two more for the South Division-leading Patriots. Designated hitter Josh Pressley went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI on a night in which seven members of the Somerset lineup had at least one base hit. Ducks rightfielder Kevin Haverbusch brought Long Island to within one run of tying the game with a three-run homer in the seventh, and was 3-for-4 on the night. But the Patriots answered with six in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Andy Van Hekken (2-0) allowed three runs - two earned - in six innings of work to pick up the win. Ducks starter Pat Ahearne (1-2) took the loss, working four and two-thirds innings. Long Island's bats bothered Somerset reliever Casey Cahill, capped by the Haverbusch home run. But Saul Solveson and R.D. Speihs combined for two innings of hitless relief to close out the game.
The Ducks and Patriots continue their three-game set on Wednesday evening at Citibank Park with a 6:35 p.m. start time.
